Nikolas Gambaroff (b. 1979, Germany) is a contemporary artist whose practice interrogates the structures of authorship, language, and the cultural role of painting. Educated at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and holding an MFA from Bard College in New York, Gambaroff currently lives and works between Berlin and Los Angeles.
Gambaroff’s work is rooted in painting but often expands into sculpture, installation, and performance. His compositions challenge the viewer’s perception and question the commodification of visual culture.
Gambaroff’s work has been exhibited at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Recent solo exhibitions include “Kluft” at Schiefe Zähne in Berlin, “The last days of Mankind” at the Kitchen, New York, “Auction of Souls” (with Ei Arakawa) at Galerie Meyer Kainer in Vienna, and “The truce hurts” at Overduin & Co. in Los Angeles.
Gambaroff’s practice continues to explore the evolving relationship between image, language, and material, positioning painting as both a cultural artifact and a site of critical inquiry.
