1964, born in Graz (Austria), lives and works in Vienna (Austria). Interventions in public spaces, sculptures, photographs, and technically elaborate installations, most of which actively involve the viewer in the work, emerge from the graphic series “Gezeichnete Ausstellungen” (Drawn Exhibitions). This basis of Werner Reiterer's artistic work, a series of pencil drawings, each measuring 70 x 50 cm, was created in 1996. Drawing is a medium that allows the artist to reorganize relationships between objects and ideas in unexpected ways. Reiterer exploits this potential, making ironic leaps of imagination that undermine our expectations and raise questions about the way we see and understand the world. Akin to a sophisticated form of note-taking, his works have a humorous and absurd quality all their own, while together they form an ongoing catalogue of the artist’s limitless reflections upon reality. Because Werner Reiterer's entire artistic approach is very close to the human being, his works can also often speak or breathe, asking the viewer to take certain actions and have a very pronounced interactive level. The viewer is not only actively involved in the conception and realization of the work as a "living, sculptural material," but is also an essential component of the work. He also realized numerous temporary or permanent works in public space, aiming to implant sculptural elements capable of redefining a space.
Werner Reiterer studied graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He is a member of the Forum Stadtpark, Graz and the Vienna Secession.
His work was exhibited, for instance, at Landesgalerie Niederösterreich, Krems, Austria, Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria (2019), Wien Museum MUSA, Vienna, Austria (2018), Broad Art Museum, East Landing, USA (2017) and many others. His work has been shown at Galerie Krinzinger in four solo exhibitions since 2004.
